Throughout my time during English 11000, I’ve developed and improved immensely as a writer. I’ve been able to achieve my goals of improving my vocabulary, understanding and utilizing rhetoric within my essays, and analyzing readings. I’ve also learned many new skills and strategies such as using scholarly journals, evaluating the credibility of certain sources and authors, being able to cite MLA format on my own, and writing synthesis and analysis paragraphs. In the beginning of the semester, I’ve always been used to writing a short limited amount, usually 2-3 pages. However, with the use of all the knowledge I’ve acquired and practiced, for my third essay I was able to write 5 pages, which is the most I’ve written. I’ve grown to become fond of writing and reading throughout this semester. Certain texts that I’ve specifically enjoyed reading and have written about in my essays are Mother Tongue by Amy Tan and Wildwood by Junot Diaz. I’ve also enjoyed watching TED talks, such as Safwat Saleem’s “Why I keep speaking up even when people mock my accent”. These readings and videos have stuck out to me the most, and I enjoyed analyzing them to use in my essays. In one instance, when I analyzed Amy Tan’s Mother Tongue, I quoted “Authors such as Amy Tan explore these topics, such as in her text, Mother Tongue, where she shares her anecdotes and storytells how language has affected her dynamic with her mother”. This shows how I’ve been able to identify the rhetoric used in her text, and I further analyzed it to support my claims. I’ve been able to do this repeatedly throughout my essays, which has helped improve the quality of my writing. Overall, my reading, writing, analyzing, and rhetoric skills have significantly improved and I’ve been able to master the course learning objectives.
